The story of Brett’s Biltong begins with a passion rooted in tradition and family. Our founder, Brett Petzer, learned to make biltong, boerewors, and droëwors alongside his father in Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe). These cherished moments crafting traditional dried meats would later become the foundation for a thriving business that brings the authentic taste of Africa to the heart of Texas.

After Brett married his wife Rashael, they relocated to Texas where Brett managed a large exotic hunting ranch in Hondo. While his career path seemed set, Brett always harbored an entrepreneurial spirit and a deep connection to his African heritage. The distinctive flavors of properly made biltong were something he missed—and something he knew he could share with his new American home.

In what many would consider the most challenging time to start a business, Brett and Rashael took a leap of faith. They launched Brett’s Biltong during the COVID pandemic in 2020, a testament to their courage and determination. As Brett himself says about entrepreneurship: “VASBYT! Running a small business is not for sissies.”

Starting in a small stone house in Pipe Creek, between San Antonio and Bandera, Brett began producing biltong and droëwors the traditional way—the way his father had taught him. Brett’s commitment to authenticity was unwavering: “That is why we continue to manufacture our dried meat products the old-fashioned way!”

The journey wasn’t without challenges. Brett identifies “taking the first leap to expand our business” as one of the most difficult situations he’s faced. Yet through perseverance and a dedication to quality, Brett’s Biltong began to flourish.

What started as a specialty meat shop gradually expanded to include a wider selection of South African products. Today, Brett’s Biltong offers not just exceptional dried meats but also a carefully curated selection of South African wines (including a variety of reds, rosés, and whites), Windhoek beer, and numerous grocery items that bring a taste of home to South Africans living abroad.

But through all our growth, we’ve maintained our commitment to the values that Brett established from the beginning: authenticity, quality, and a warm sense of community. Each customer who walks through our doors is treated like family, whether they’re South African expatriates looking for a taste of home or Americans trying biltong for the very first time.

In a significant move for the business, Brett closed the original Pipe Creek location at the end of April 2024 and opened the doors to a new, expanded shop in Llano, Texas on May 11, 2024. This relocation represents not just growth but Brett’s proudest accomplishment: “Opening the doors to our new business. Today, I can proudly say I am the happiest I’ve ever been in my life.”

Brett’s vision extends beyond simply selling products. His goal for 2024 is “To make our store a ONE STOP SHOP where one can get your shopaholic kick, on the go and even just chillout in the Safari Lounge and feel like you’re back home in Africa. A home from home and a pantry to go with.”

This vision captures the essence of what makes Brett’s Biltong special. It’s not just a store—it’s a cultural experience, a community hub, and a place where memories of Africa come alive. As Brett describes it, seeing “the smiles and the joy on people’s faces when they walk into our shop as it takes them back home to good memories” is what drives him and his team to maintain the highest standards of quality and service.

Today, Brett’s Biltong stands as a testament to the power of passion, heritage, and perseverance. Living by the motto “We lead, others follow,” Brett continues to innovate while staying true to traditional methods and flavors.
